Week 8 Reflection

This section of my blog contains my reflection of my experience during the eighth week of this internship.

  1. During the week of October 12th, I taught reading focused around the story “We’ll Never Forget You Roberto Clemente.” The students seemed to respond to this story very well, I believe, because the story focused on a famous person in sports. It was a biographical text as well which is something that the students had not read in our class prior to. This may have been another reason that the students did well with this story because it was someone that they could picture… a real live person at one time.

During this week, I also looked deeper into my survey responses relating to aiding student comprehension. A great deal of students suggested trying to find ways to play games in order to review for the reading test on Friday. Thus, I spent a great deal of time thinking, working and putting together questions to review with the students in a fun way. One word: Jeopardy. It took several hours one evening to put together a computer based Jeopardy game through creating a format with PowerPoint, but seeing the students’ responses and their improved test grades, I believe that all the time and effort was worth it. This is something that I believe I will continue to use… and now that I have the format, it shouldn’t take as long to plug in questions!

  2. Glad the kids liked the Jeopardy game--"fun" is almost always worth the effort! If you found the kids liked that biography, capitalize on that--find some other biographies and work on a genre related project. You'll get in your skills and the kids will enjoy the stories!
