Week 1 Reflection

This section of my blog focuses on the first week in my internship classroom with my mentor teacher, Mrs. Mary Lous Morris, and first full day(s) experiences with these fifth grade students.

  1. Topic: For this first week in reflection, I have decided to focus on my Year 4 Portfolio strengths and looking into the future at my Year 5, and final, Portfolio.

Looking back through my Year 4 Portfolio, I began to think back to the 2008-2009 school year; this is the most impressive semester to me relating to my course load. Each semester during this school year, I carried the maximum allowed credit hours. Along with such, I was able to maintain good standing and meeting the required hours in the classroom as a participant at North Elementary. During the fall semester, I was able to achieve a 4.0 GPA, which is something that I don't believe I could ever be more proud of, especially considering the full course load. I feel that this is one of the strengths of my portfolio.

Also, there are several other inclusions that I am very proud of and would consider carrying over into my Year 5 Portfolio. First, I have been very proud of my Multi-Genre Research Paper since English 101. As an English major, I feel that this paper, or magazine as it is presented, best demonstrates how a message can be delivered and taught to students in different forms. Second, I am proud of my "Chinese New Year" lesson plan. In this lesson plan, I am able to outline, address, and teach to different learning needs, diversity, and include technology. This is also another feature of this portfolio that I will likely plan to carry over to my Year 5 Portfolio, just to name a few.

As the semester progresses, I will likely develop lesson plans that I believe can be included in my Year 5 Portfolio; however, for the time being, the above mentioned are some selections and strengths that are candidates to begin the Year 5 Portfolio collection process.

  2. Good thoughts, Stephanie! Remember that you can use this to reflect on your weekly time in the classroom as well. That alone is a weighty topic!

  3. Stephanie,

You've identified a number of artifacts that might be used for lessons with your students this year. I'm wondering what you're thinking about as far as possibly using some of them....and how you might need to modify them for the students you have this year.

I'm hoping to hear about the experiences you're having in the classroom....what you're learning about your students....about teaching and learning.

Looking forward to your next entry,
    Sharon
